At the NANOCON´21 Prof. Dr. Tomáš Šikola will open the Session A Nanomaterials for electronic, magnetic and optic applications, carbon nanostructures, quantum dots.


Education and Career Accomplishments:
Tomáš Šikola has been educated in applied physics.  He graduated at the Faculty of Science of the Masaryk University in Brno (Czech Republic) in 1981 and at Comenius University, Bratislava (Slovakia) he defended the degree of CSc. (equivalent to PhD.).  He has been habilitated at Masaryk University in Brno in 1998. Since the year 2005 he is a full Professor of Applied Physics at Brno University of Technology (BUT) a and since the year 2006 he is the director of the Institute of Physical Engineering (IPE) at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering BUT. During the past 20 years Prof. Šikola has been supervising more than 20 PhD students.


Research interests:
His present research interests are in nanoscale science, fabrication of nanostructures and investigation of their functional properties, plasmonics and development of analytical and measurement methods and instruments. Prof. Šikola is a respected expert in the fields of preparation and characterization of nanoscale structures.

Prof. Šikola provides ample experience in the coordination of nanoscience & technology programs at the national and international level; he was one of the leading scientists who initiated and prepared the project CEITEC (Central European Institute of Technology) as a unique research centre focusing primarily of the fields of advanced materials, nanotechnologies and life sciences.  Since its establishment in 2011, CEITEC has developed into a cutting-edge research infrastructure performing highly alongside the best institutes in Europe. Tomáš Šikola is the coordinator of CEITEC “Advanced Nanotechnologies and Microtechnologies” research program and leader of “Fabrication and Characterisation of Nanostructures” research group there.

Prof. Tomáš Šikola has authored and co-authored over 60 scientific publications.


Non-research activities:
He was the principal organizer of 7 international summer schools on “Physics at nanoscale”, the member of advisory committees to universities, professional societies and international conferences, and the Councilor of the Czech Republic in the International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and Applications (IUVSTA).
