Dr. Marián VARGA

Institute of Electrical Engineering of the SAS, Slovak Republic, EU

Position: Senior researcher at the Department of Microelectronics and Sensors at the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava, Slovak Republic

Specialization: Carbon-based materials; CVD technology; Optical and electrical properties.

At the NANOCON´21 conference Marián Varga will present an invited lecture “Diamond nanostructures and composites for optics and photonics” at the session A.

Personal Background and Education:
Dr. Marián Varga (*1981) received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in 2008 and 2013, respectively, from the Slovak University of Technology, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology in Bratislava. In 2011, he joined as PhD student and later on as postdoc the Diamond materials group of assoc. prof. Alexander Kromka at the Institute of Physics (IoP) of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague. In 2020 he has been awarded senior researcher position at the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava, where he continues his work on preparation of heterostructures combining diamond and 2D materials.

Research Interests and main results:
Research activities of Dr. Varga focus on chemical vapour deposition of carbon-based materials and composites (mainly using nanocrystalline diamond thin films) in their intrinsic or doped form, post-growth modification including nanostructuring, etching and surface chemical functionalization, and characterization of opto-electronic properties of the fabricated (hetero)structures. For instance, together with the team at IoP he succeeded in reaching efficient spectral overlap between the emission from SiV− centers and the cavity modes without any post-processing and in large-scale fabrication of diamond-based 2D photonic crystal slab using microsphere lithography. He also pursued other multidisciplinary topics within several national and international projects. He was the principal investigator (PI) of 3 bilateral projects and 1 national project under the COST Action. Currently, he is the PI of the SAS project on fabrication and characterization of TMD/diamond heterostructures under the Mobility and Reintegration Programme (MoRePro) of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

Publication activity:
He has authored and co-authored 68 publications that have been cited for over 700 times (Scopus), 1 book chapter and 1 utility design. Hirsch index: 14.
